Easter is a confusing concept for kids

After I picked him up from church preschool, our 4-year-old son gave a very impressive retelling of what he learned that day about Easter - He talked about God dying on the cross and rising from the dead, and said that's what Easter's all about.

He didn't have it all exactly right, but I thought it was impressive that a child his age had retained so much information. So I tried to get him to retell it later in the day when the whole family was together.

His older brother is in First Grade, and he piped up and excitedly explained that Easter is about hunting for eggs and getting lots of candy.

Our 4-year-old quickly reasoned that both his teachers and his big brother must be right, so he combined the information:

"God has a BIG Easter basket."

Well, why not? He's God, after all. Who am I to argue?

25th and 50th wedding anniversary gift ideas

What do you get a couple to help celebrate their 25th or 50th wedding anniversary?

Not everybody can afford to send their parents or grandparents on a cruise for their golden anniversary, but you want something special. A custom pencil portrait is a great idea for their 25th or 50th wedding anniversary gift.

I've drawn pencil portraits of couples how they look now, I've drawn portraits of how the couple looked back when they were dating or engaged.

I've drawn portraits that combine both these ideas. One 25th anniversary gift portrait I did showed the couple at the beginning of their marriage on the left, and how they looked at the time of their anniversary on the right. In the center, I drew the couple's hands and some flowers from some of their wedding photos. Their wedding song was "We've Only Just Begun" by The Carpenters, so I hand-lettered that in script across the top. It was a really nice idea, to show 'then' and 'now' in one portrait, and bringing their wedding song into the portrait had extra sentimental meaning for the couple.

I've drawn couples from separate photos, if you don't have photos of the couple together at the beginning of their courtship, that can be recreated by having them drawn so they look like were together all along in the anniversary portrait.

No longer have toll free number

Like a lot of people and businesses these days, I've had to look at ways I can cut costs without impacting customer service.

One thing I have canceled is the toll-free phone number I had, which was an 888 toll free number ending in 736-0617. Please do not call this number - because it's no longer mine.

As I looked at expenses, I could see this was something to be cut. It cost me money when someone called me at the toll free number, and it was almost always telemarketers calling. I don't like paying money for people to bug me. ;-)

I had to think about whether canceling the toll-free phone number would hurt my customers. Most people now use their cell phones, and most cellphone users have a monthly allotment of minutes they can use, so it's not a long-distance cost to them.

So many people are also communicating primarily through email, so they have the information in writing and easily retrievable.

I hope that you don't mind this little change, and realize that this will help me keep my art commission prices down.

I would recommend Kall8 if anyone needs a toll-free phone number, I just don't do the volume of business in order for it to be most profitable.

Observation

Proctor and Gamble has recalled Pringles Restaurant Cravers Cheeseburger potato crisps and Pringles Family Faves Taco Night potato crisps. Although I think if you are eating those flavors, you may have a bigger problem than salmonella.

Snowing in Snellville

By now, you may know it snowed today in the Atlanta area. As I write this, it is snowing. All kids desperately want Gwinnett County Schools to close.

The following is a text message conversation between myself and my teenage daughter. Although I have always respected Erma Bombeck, now that I have 4 children, I realize that she really didn't have to come up with ideas so much as just write down what happened.

Some schools early releasing today. Gwinnett not. You don't have 2 stay after school 2day though.

I think they're going to cancel it anyways. Its supposed to get worse later...around 5-ish.
